Polar Trawler
Cali Kula
Imagine embarking on a voyage across Antarctica aboard a trawler. Cali Kula lived this experience a few years ago, setting sail from Ushuaia towards icy and remote territories. "Polar Trawler" serves as a soundtrack, encapsulating all the emotions one might experience during such an adventure.
An odyssey of Ambient Techno unfolds with the opening track, "Polar Trawler," which lends its name to the album. It marks the beginning of a chilly journey, amidst cloudy and uncertain weather. The essence of the title is captured by the TB303 sound, wrapped in layers of analog pads and a subtle beat. The track's architecture mirrors the slow pace of the crossing, evoking the discovery of a maritime space seldom frequented by humans. The polar trawler sets sail.
As the journey progresses, icebergs loom larger and more numerous. This spectacle is eloquently portrayed in "Lady Iceberg." The obsessive and repetitive analog bass of the MS20 echoes the sounds of the trawler, always enveloped by pads resembling slow, cresting waves. "Lady Iceberg" is a moment of solitude and contemplation.
When night falls, the sensation is extraordinary. A trawler's nocturnal crossing is a rare experience, depicted in "Night Crossing." Perhaps there is a gentle unease lingering, yet the sound is rich and diverse, shifting like changes in mood.
During the voyage, one encounters the wildlife peacefully inhabiting this corner of the world. "Polar Dance" embodies the penguin's dance, relaxed and airy. The bass leads the dance amidst Dub Techno tones. This observation is a moment of pure joy for those fortunate enough to witness it. "Polar Trawler" represents a communion with nature in a part of the world relatively sheltered yet endangered by climate change and glacier melt.
